Here is the final t-shirt design my group mate, Vanessa, and I made. It is a brain with bandages on it; and on the bandages there are symbols on how to cure depression. Click here for the process.

This is the little booklet my group mate, Jose, created. It talks about some symptoms of depression and where in the brain it's affected. Click here for the process.

This is my group at the NAMI Walk exhibition. I am the one on the right with the hat. It was a really fun experience seeing all the people that care about the brain's health. Click here to see Sofi's finished NAMI Walk Activity.

This is the book my group decided to read. We then did a class discussion about our books with another group. Click here to see my Socratic Seminar Document.

How do these final products show your brain expertise?
My group’s anti-stigma message we wanted to address was that depression is a very serious issue. People often use the word depression as if it was a synonym for sad; which is incorrect. Depression is a mental illness. My group role was to design the t-shirt with Vanessa, one of my group members.
We wanted to show how to cure depression and tell the audience it takes a while to heal from a traumatic event, such as depression. We went through several critique sessions and took almost all the feedback into consideration. The first draft of our t-shirt design was a brain with bandages on it to represent it is in some sort of pain. With the critique we received, Vanessa and I wanted to put symbols on the bandages, and those symbols would represent how to cure depression. When we presented our t-shirts, everyone liked our design because it was unique and is informative.

How did the book club help you build your brain health expertise?
The Depression Cure is about overcoming depression with the program, Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC). Instead of using pills and inorganic products, you can use organic products such as omega-3 acids. The TLC program is designed to help cure depression in an organic way.
I learned about the Omega-3 molecules; there are three different types varying from sizes. DHA is the longest molecule, EPA is the medium-length molecule, and ALA being the smallest molecule of the three.
When people are depressed they tend to have a lack of DHA, which is used to transmit brain signals effectively.
EPA is a molecule that is able to move swiftly and lightly in and out of neurons to help them use brain chemicals like serotonin (neurotransmitter mainly found in the hypothalamus and midbrain. Also influences mood, hunger and some muscle functions) and dopamine (neurotransmitter influences emotional behavior, but plays some role in stress and voluntary muscles) more effectively.
I have always known that humans are made for each other; they work best in a community. I used to go through some sort of depression, like the story I wrote for The Power Within.
I didn’t want to talk to anyone about my feelings anymore until I found my outlet, which was my social support.
“Hunting, cooking, eating, playing, foraging, sleeping, grooming -- they’re all carried out in the company of close friends and loved ones. Loneliness and social isolation and virtually unknown.”

After the NAMI Walk exhibition, what are you most proud of?
At the NAMI walk exhibition, a lot of people who cared about the mental health were there. The mood there was amazing, people were dancing, walking around Liberty Station, and learning more about mental health. My proudest moment from the exhibition was when someone came up to my booth, he introduced himself and told us he had suffered from depression.
When my group and I told him all the facts about teen depression, he was really hooked. After that, I told him about how important social support is. From the book my group chose to read, The Depression Cure, it was talking about how important social support was. Our human roots, we hunted together, we ate together, we played together, humans were made to be together. When we get depressed, we isolate ourselves and lose our roots.
